Yoga Solutions classes Free access for all Premium members Membership options are here 2022 -'23 There is a link at the bottom of the page for previous classes A meditation to set you up well on a daily basis Meditation is a key practice that is mostly skipped over, simply because of how difficult it is to both still the mind and remain upright. Here I offer a practical way of introducing a daily chakra meditation to your life, together with practices that will not only cause the mind to centre and become still, but it will also set you up physically for a new way of being in the world... Continue Happy Hips! freeing up the Psoas and Illio-Psoas If the hips or lower back feel stiff, tight or painful in postures, the chances are that you habitually support yourself with a holding pattern of the psoas and/or illiopsoas muscles, and if you do that in an unbalanced way (if you are right- or left-footed), it leads to scoliotic holding patterns to compensate. Knowing this does nothing to help you, because trying to 'open' or 'stretch' these muscles will simply cause them to resist your efforts. The problem is that they are being given the job of supporting you whatever you are doing (including trying to stretch them). The solution is simple - take the job of support away from them by giving yourself other ways of supporting yourself. This will lead to an intense strengthening of muscles you probably don't even know you have (because they are currently not needed), but the good news is that this 'other way' can become effortless, because the muscles I am talking about are naturally take part in both support and breathing (IF you are not holding yourself up with the hips and spine). The first part will give you the direct experience of what it actually feels like to let go of the Psoas family of muscles, and what follows will develop the support you need to replace it - support that relates to the breath and the ground beneath you. Continue The ultimate guide to freeing up your neck There are two very unusual vertebrae in the neck that are related to expression and thought - and moreover whether you are free in these vertebrae or not is dependent on how you are interacting with the world! On this short Yoga solutions podcast, I explain what I mean by this as well as give you a direct physical exploration of how you can liberate natural movement between head and neck, and awaken the thoracic spine so that neck and shoulders no longer need to suffer from the job of holding you up all day... This is the full 1 hour exploration of this idea with practical guidance. Continue How the sacrum, pelvis & hips like to move Hips are quite a tricky thing to understand because what people understand as 'hips' depends on where they 'feel' them. Articulations of the hips involve how the thigh bones, pelvic bones, and the sacrum all move relative to each other. Tightness/difficulty in the hips is a result of holding patterns between these things (all permutations), which is always because of how you hold yourself up. Freedom in the hips relies on each component part of this intricate joint being free to move in the way 'it prefers' without any particular part of it being left responsible for catching and holding your weight. Here I take you through an exploration that should shine a light on your own sacro-illiac-hip holding patterns and give you a way of releasing them. Continue UNDERSTANDING THE BREATH IN POSTURE WORK Many teachers recognise the importance of the breath in posture work, yet breathing practices (aka pranayama), are mostly practiced 'separately' because it is considered as 'advanced' compared to posture work. However, if we are free to explore how the breath is naturally involved in active support whilst preparing for a posture, it makes complete sense of the pranayamas. And understanding the nature of the breath makes complete sense of postures! Continue Freeing up the Shoulders A regular question i get is about how to be free in the shoulders... but whenever I run workshops in new places with large groups of people, one of the things not asked is 'how to reach up with the arms during sun salute'... Yet absolutely everyone in the room is lifting their arms with their shoulders and neck when they come up... which is exactly what gives them the tight shoulders in the first place. I start with a 5 minute trick that will get you to understand how shoulders are supposed to move, and then take you into more depth so it can be applied to postures (reclining eagle & Triangle) Continue Sitting & Seated Forward Bends Sitting upright is really quite tricky for many people - and if so seated forward bends are even harder. Here I show you why and what you need to do differently if you want to 'get' seated postures. Continue Deconstructing Dog pose Dog pose is such a ubiquitous 'in between' posture in flows and the like that it is rare for people to spend any time finding out if there are better ways of doing it.. here I offer you a broken-down-into-parts approach, so you can feel how best to use your arms and legs so that the posture does what it is meant to do for you. Continue Tight hips in Triangle? Triangle (all versions from all traditions) is quite a difficult posture in terms of 'finding the yoga of it'. The bigger wider versions of it can only really be enjoyed and understood whist using a plethora of blocks and other supports - without which the practitioner is likely to strain and pull on their spines (wide angle triangle is notorious for 'causing' sacro-illiac distortions which can become devastating injuries). The clue that you're not doing a particularly useful version of triangle posture is when the front leg hip is holding on like crazy whilst you move yourself into and 'hold' the pose. Here I offer an approach to a modified version of the posture that might give you a direct somatic experience of what it's supposed to feel like (intense, but light and pleasurable) Continue How to cause REAL transformation I share something of my own story and a longterm healing of a mild scoliosis that felt to be the source of a plethora of postural issues that got me to begin my journey over 30 years ago. And how the process of discovery through practice and deep self-inquiry has led to an understanding of things based in reality rather than opinion and bias... and to a life where I get more comfortable, and in many ways younger in my body as I get older. I also share a little something at the end that shows how the breath is the vehicle for marrying up intention with the natural body in movement.... Continue The Chakras- for both believers & non-believers THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF 'YOGA SOLUTIONS' ... Developing a true somatic experience and practical understanding of what they actually are . Continue NECK & SHOULDERS - a permanent solution Many people get neck/shoulder stiffness or pain, and the reason is simply because we spend all day every day holding the head in space with those muscles... The head has an important role in you deciding where to move to in space, but here, I explain how the atlas, the very first vertebra of the neck, can be released so that the head's weight can always be given down through the axis of the spine, regardless of what you are doing, leaving your neck and shoulders free of any weight-bearing responsibility. I also give you something to practice, that will write this way of moving into your nervous system... If you ever suffer from stiff neck and shoulders (or just have a kind of tiredness that makes you want to be inactive all the time) this practice will make you feel free and light… Continue WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LOWER BACK SEIZES UP... Many people end up hurting their lower backs through some kind of physical labour whilst being bent over - and I am no exception. I strained my lower back doing some DIY... and when I noticed my own fear reactions together with the 'normal' attempt to 'relax' so things didn't hurt, I realised that this standard response was doing me no good whatsoever. So I had a word with myself (I have solutions right?) and did some practice on the day of injury - following my own understanding and honouring of the notion that 'the body is intelligent' in order to unravel the issue. And it worked ! The next day I was back to DIY without any problems ... in fact the following day I was more balanced, and stronger than before the back-strain happened. So here I share both the thinking behind what I did together with the intention behind, and 'how to' details of, the simple practice of balancing on one foot in order to release the issue... You don't have to have a strained lower back to feel the benefits of following this, and if you do ever suffer from that, this will give you a get out of jail free card when it happens... Continue 'FLOW' and the breath... De-bunking the norm. There is a reason for the 'inhale up/exhale down' instruction that makes 'doing' yoga postures easier for the mind and body, giving the impression of 'flow'. However, that reason is more to do with habit and stress, than it is to do with the natural flow of a body and mind in harmony with each other in action. Lifting to breathe, and collapsing to release the breath is kind of how we do things when we are both stressed and tired, and practicing yoga in this way entrenches this behaviour into our movement. Here I guide you into an experiential understanding of how the breath itself can become the source of support and free movement, simply by adjusting your intent, at the specific moments of arrival and release of the breath... Continue Inner space & Inner support 'Inner space' is a description of a purely somatic experience that most people only have when resting and happy.... Here I give you a way of providing that for yourself directly, simply by using your hands for support. 'Inner support' is similarly a description of a somatic experience that will mean very different things to different people depending on what efforts and tensions they are accustomed to... So I also offer an approach to the same thing as above (as your starting point) to set things up so that the breath itself can give you the most natural inner support you can develop (through the breath), which in turn offers you a strength that leaves you free in your movements through space... Continue Postural Strategies & the breath We all have preferred ways of being upright, and our breath follows suit - OR we have preferred ways of breathing, and the way we become upright is determined by this. Most ways of becoming upright involve lifting with our spines (but definitely NOT the only way). Here I unpack this relationship to uprightness and breathing, and show you how you can use either (perfectly natural) pattern as a starting point to discover the 'yoga' of it... ie, how you can use the breath to discover a way of releasing into uprightness through an elongating spine, following a release of breath and tension.... Continue A DIY face-lift Self massage for the face, head and specifically the jaw ... jaw tension is often a source of difficulties in the neck and shoulders, and holding-patterns in the face often maintains unnecessary holding patterns in the body and breath... Do this once for a nice experience, do it daily for a week and change things for good. Continue THE MIND, THE CORE & LOOKING AFTER THE SPINE How to sidestep the biggest source of confusion in physical practice and avoid 'red herrings' in our attempt to understand yoga. Moving from the core and ribcage, in harmony with the breath to free up the spine Moving & expressing FROM the spine behind the heart, Resting THROUGH your central axis. Continue Moving from the Spine "Moving from the Spine" Most restrictions in the body can be simply dropped when you move from the spine ... with the spine at the central axis of everything you are doing. This is NOT the same as working to bend your spine this way and that - particularly if you are using your weight to do it. Here I try and explain exactly what I mean by 'moving from the spine' and give you a rather fun, simple (and kind of random) thing you can do to naturally awaken the spine, core and other 'breathing gear' in the way I mean... Continue The best way to use your limbs in practice... Most people's yoga practice is sourced in their teacher's instructions - following those instructions causes us to do things in quite unnatural ways. Here I offer a simple explanation of how the limbs most naturally support us, and invite you to apply that nature to your practice.... Continue True spinal extension how to 'open from the heart'... Most people have problems in backbends for the simple fact that they are relying on passive extension of lumbars and neck to achieve it ... this not only 'pinches' the spine in a less-than-useful way, but it actually prevents any movement from the upper spine happening. True spinal extension (backbending AND spine elongation in uprightness) originates from a direct reversal of the rounded part of the back (rather than trying to use your weight to lever extension into the spine)... and this in turn is essentially a natural function of the person expressing openness (rather than of someone trying the 'bend' their spine). The folowing shoud help you discover what I am talking about as a direct somatic experience... Continue Balances If you want to be able to balance, don't try and balance! Here I explain the reason for any difficulty you might have in 'balance postures' or the even more misleading instruction of 'holding balances'. And i show you exactly the small shift in perspective and understanding that should make things much simpler... Continue 'Gathering together' to create more space! There is a familiar principle in Scaravelli inspired yoga of 'gathering together ' before 'opening out'. It is an idea that makes zero sense to the 'stretch' camp of yoga, and is often misinterpreted by those familiar with it as a kind of 'contraction' so they enjoy 'opening out' after... Here I try and make practical sense of the thing... what you are actually trying to do AND why it works. Continue The limbs and your relationship with the world. The limbs, and how to find a supportive relationship to the world from the way you engage with it. Most of us are in a habitual and reactionary relationship with the world around us, that involves 'pushing away' or 'pulling in'. Both of these attitudes get hard-wired into our movement and are each equally debilitating for our energy and physical/emotional/mental health. Here I give you the idea with an example or two and show you how to shift this life-dimming paradigm directly through your practice. (Apologies for the echo 5 mins in - it was a feedback between the FBlive and my microphone... It stops v. soon after) Continue A very different Yoga Solutions A pranayama practice (breath retention) that can be used directly to shift state of mind, and to help deprogram ourselves out of unhelpful thought loops. Continue Deconstructing the humble forward bend Forward bending is something everyone can do to some degree or other, but how easy and comfortable forward bending is, depends entirely on how you got there. The simplest of postures offer the most value and content, IF you are prepared to genuinely let go of habit, in favour of exploration of what is both possible and natural... Here I offer you the reasons forward bending can be restrictive or uncomfortable for you, and give you a way of approaching the movement that should make total sense to your body... Continue Understanding back-bends UNDERSTANDING SPINAL EXTENSION Most of us do back-bending by habitually hyperextending the lumbars and/or neck. Doing so is not a particularly useful practice and can aggravate and exaggerate postural habits... Here I explain what needs to happen for you to extend your spine in a useful and pleasurable way. Continue Opening the Hips 'Hip opening postures' often have the opposite effect for people.... they try and stretch their hips open, and the outcome leaves them even tighter in the groins/psoas/adductors & lower back. Here I unravel the problem and show you what 'hip opening' actually feels like, so that you can carry a new relationship to your hips with you, that will ALLOW them to open. Continue Demystifying the body and the breath When you do things TO the body and the breath, you might develop control of how you move and breathe, but you will be exaggerating the separation between yourself and your body. And separation is at the source of any physical/emotional issue you are using your yoga to redress... Here I offer a clear and practical explanation of the difference between this, and relating to the world THROUGH your body and breath, which unites you with both. Follow my suggestions and feel the difference in yourself ... if you like the feeling, it will change your practice forever... If you have a few yoga years under your belt and would like to do my deep dive into pranayama course, go to https://www.acquaviva.yoga/the-sacred-breath-1 Continue How to let go of any issues around your lower back, hips neck and shoulders... All of these things are to do with how we hold our weight up ... Here I show you how to become light, by giving your weight to to ground instead of to your back and joints... Enjoy! Continue My go-to 15min practice Leg extensions - the way to do it that makes you want to do it all the time.... Continue Shoulders in dog pose (plus my thoughts on Astanga) Continue Bow pose/ Crescent pose How to liberate the upper spine for the true 'yoga' experience of these extension postures. Continue THE solution to tight hamstrings "The solution to tight hamstrings... When your hamstrings are tight, it is usually because they are overly involved with your support strategy. Here I explain what might cause this, and then offer a practice that is very likely to lead to a completely different somatic experience of opening out the legs, together with actually being able to let go of the habitual hamstring resistance, so they can be 'stretched' without the usual problems that go with attempting to do this." Continue The FEET! The best way to massage them, and how to do any kind of balance. Continue Click for Previous Yoga Solutions >

Opening the upper lungs and spine The last workshop of the year for my Elite members :-). It was a doozie... enjoy! ... to make this the centre of your movement through space 6 December 2025 36. Everything you do... This workshop directly explores what and 'awakened spine' both means and feels like. And then we take note of how every other part of the body can engage in ways that suppport this freedom. The double bonus of this is that the rest of the body benefits from this union as much as the spine does. ... should be in service to the awakening spine 29 November 2025 35. The root of flying The thighs are like your 'pelvic wings'... I continued the previous week's theme with a bit more emphasis on the lower half of things - and how hands and feet need to operate to become the ultimate support for the spine to express itself in movement. Releasing the spine from the root 22 November 2025 34. Finding your wings I had a nice day with Diane Long and brought my interpretation of the experience to my students... Flying from within 8 November 2025 33.Bringing life to the sleepy heart In my intention to simplify, there hasn't been a single occasion when 'moving from the spine behind heart' hasn't ended up as the ultimate answer. Everything else I teach is to help all the parts of you that prevent this movement out of the way. When you move from the heart, and it is genuine and natural, every part of you will be involved in a supportive way. This workshop gave you things that make this experience clear to your own felt sense. What 'Awakening the spine' really is... 1 November 2025 32. All about the head Whatever title or description i come up with for this doesn't do it justice... We hold our heads when we think, talk, look at something, even when we are 'relaxing'. And it is the main thing that prevents us from natural expressive movement from the thoracic spine and heart. This workshop built a step by step guide to awakening the spine through putting in the effort required to no longer require the head to hold itself... the outcome shows you what it feels like to move from the spine naturally. How to be strong enough to not need to hold your head... 25 October 2025 31. Inner space, outer support, and the central experience A workshop on a theme that is developing - included sidebending, twists, leg extensions and approach to wheel How to look after the neck and lower back 11 October 2025 30. How to free your hips and lower back. This very small workshop was like a 2 and a half hour yoga solutions for hips and lower back. We started lying down in various arrangements to explore the space we can create, then employed movement from the ribs to reorganise ourselves into positions where the movements of core and ribs happen simply because we breathe.... Taken into standing and sitting postures and the final relaxation. Learning to find support through and move from - the spine behind the heart. 20 September 2025 29. All questions answered... This session turned into one of my most comprehensive workshops. I began as always asking what people were interested in, and I was presented with a few questions that inspired answers that seemed to make sense of everything to the participants. (they have all been with me for a long time, so the reason I can say that is that everyone's practice was reflecting the first principles I am always talking about - so I know they were having direct somatic experiences of what I was talking about). There is a superb relaxation at the end that i may add to the 'art of letting go' course.... Bringing clarity and simplicity to practice 13 September 2025 28.The practice -from scratch I had someone new turn up for this one, which is always good because it means I can build up the picture of what we are trying to achieve with our practice from the very beginning. This is essentials. My work relies on people being able to shift all the standard ways of thinking of the body in favour of allowing the body to begin to share its voice with us... This workshop explains the fundamental 'rules; that allow this, mostlly focussing on how actions the breath need to be able to support whatever we are doing (rather than the spine being relied on to carry our weight) The fundamental pucture of things to guide your practice 6 September 2025 27. the spine behind the heart After a summer break, my practice (as always) was centred on simlifying... and yet again my body came to the conclusion that absolutely every solution for every part of the body is a relationship that allows the thoracic spine to be the source of movement, and its centre to be the centre of gravity... This workshop went deep into this principle understanding. the centre of ALL my instructions 19 July 2025 26. A true Yin Yoga class Yin yoga (passive) only works if the organisation of things precisely matches the releases you need. This takes precision of awareness to be able to organise your bones so they can do their job without the effort of holding them up. If you have some time, and a mindset to heal through resting - follow this (to the letter) Healing the body through precisely supported release. 12 July 2025 25. The ideal body map A very small (and just 1hr) workshop that launched into this principle from a question from a participant. IT went on to explore how we use arms, legs, hands feet wrists and and ankles, when movement is sourced in the thoracic spine. (ie. moving from the heart) Moving from the thorax - the solution to all peripheral issues (neck/lower back and all joints of the limbs) 5 July 2025 24. Awakening the yoga from the inside out This starts on our backs and builds to a rhythmic pulsing flow of actions that are confluent with an expressive exhale... The thing we practice is involving each part of ourselves in the same action in the most confluent way we can find.... follow and enjoy. The rhythmic approach to unification all actions into confluence 28 June 2025 23. Your daily pranayama I started this very small workshop by sharing the start of my morning practice (Kapalabhati, first in depth, then as an exercise that turns it into a movement, followed by a retention breath that sets you up for a release into what you are doing). This practice can be done with any of the exhale-based pranayamas. The second part followed an awakening of the chest and ribs (also pranayama in physical practice) applied to bridge and cobra... A sequence that can be the model for your approach to any breath work. 21 June 2025 22. Centering in the throat This workshop explores the natural core responses to being throat-centred... a lot of the 'core-type' instructions that we usually make happen with bhandas or because I instruct you to use your ribs or core - but what is often missed is that these are natural responses to natural expressions of being human. The practice will give you a window into the feeling you get as a human being that centres in the throat... It should lead to a sense of natural strength as well as a psychological shift in relationship to the world. Advanced pranayama for the neck and throat - centres you in Vishuddi Chakra 14 June 2025 21.You are the centre of the universe Like all things, it's relatively easy to adopt concepts like this because it resonates with something deeper, but for me (and I believe for everyone) the reality of such things continues to evade us UNTIL it is directly experienced in physical reality. The breath together with your relationship to the space you occupy (through physical interaction) can give you the direct experience that will reveal the thruth of the matter... A practical breathing experience that can reveal this truth 7 June 2025 20. A practice session Diagonal 'criss-cross' relationships between all parts of yourself, grounding from chakra junctions through releasing your weight, naturalising relationships through the breath and your relationship to the space you occupy ... the list goes on. But it is all part of 'creating the conditions' that will guide you towards the unified experience that can be recognised directly as 'the Yoga'. Applying various angles of the baseline principles to physical practice 31 May 2025 19. the 'Heel' of the base This understanding of things can give you an enlightening approach to all postures and movements. (Reveals the chakras) The natural way to use the resting point of your base to release your spine into elongation. 24 May 2025 18. All about the core and the limbs The relationships that YOU create from the way you engage with the world from each of your articulating joints - and how eventually that can lead to hands and feet supporting everything we need to happen with the breath and core Discovering unity between inward and outward actions 18 May 2025 17. All about the breath and the spine First principles continued 3 May 2025 16. First Principles in Practice This started with some talk about the natural desire to 'understand' first and practice after. But true understanding only really happens when 'the yoga' happens to you - ie. it is RECOGNISED through the body (so the mind can understand directly through somatic experience). This workshop turned into first principle practices that give the body the conditions it needs for you to understand things directly. Learning to give the body the conditions it needs for yoga (and truth) to reveal itself 26 April 2025 15.Opening the heart from above down This started with a question about 'feeling' tense around the centre of the thoracic spine... this led to a deep investigation into spinal extension, brining awareness to the role of the face's relationship to space as the natural source of 'extension from above down'... and then the rest of yoga followed as a natural consequence The involvement of your face's relationship to space for whole-hearted extension of the spine 19 April 2025 14... title to follow 12 April 2025 13. All about the hips The way to have free hips is to have a body that doesn't rely on the bracing of hip flexors to hold your weight in sitting or standing. To do that, the core needs to be responsive to both the release of your weight and the breath. Awakening the core 5 April 2025 12. All about the neck After a deep experience from practice the evening before, I had to share the outcome. Not a new idea - the solution to any neck/shoulder issue is to activate movement from the spine below the neck/upper ribcage - the difference was the depth of engagement that I took it to... The outcome is enlightening. Awakening the spine behind the heart. 29 March 2025 11.The deep core This was the first one for a while where the recording worked. It was a very small class with just one person on screen, but it led to a great deal of clarity. If you want to understand and experience deep core activation, just follow the instructions. ... how to activate deep inner support, to experience freedom in everything you do. 8 March 2025 10. Natural core support and the Chakras A difficult subject! The simplest of instructions (ie. let go of your weight) leads to the deepest confusions (because we don't know how to let go). Here we spent a good amount of time and persuasion to understand and create the conditions that allows the deeper core responses to arise naturally... unravelling the habits of a lifetime takes a moment or two :-) How to develop the strengths you need by letting go. 1 March 2025 9. The Spine -Detailed exploration of body alignment, focusing on spine movement, head positioning, and relationship to space. - Discussion of scoliosis patterns and how they relate to movement and breathing techniques. -Practical exercises involving head positioning, spine alignment, and breathing techniques ... the central expression of your experience. Liberating the spine with the head. 22 February 2025 8. Standing A few tech problems - sound was a bit rough , but ok when I was teaching. This was an exploration of what we need to stand well .. conditions created whilst lying down (actually hard work) then taken into standing postures (as much work unless gravity helps). ... understanding it by lying down 15 February 2025 7. Feet & Hands .... Following a 1:1 that reminded me of the value of a deep-dive understanding of feet, I ran the workshop on a massage sequence for both hands and feet that shows you how you're supposed to use them, and then applied the action to practice of other things.... and it worked superbly well The surprising strength that arises from engaging appropriately with the world with your hands and feet. 8 February 2025 6. The face, and the spine behind the heart I alway maintain that yoga is meant to develop the most harmonious relationships between all parts of ourselves, and I mostly help people discover what these relationships are so they can heal and integrate .. but when movement, expression and support physically originate from the heart (literally - physically from the spine behind it), all the other relationships I talk about are naturally present... ...the central source of all of the most harmonious body relationships 1 February 2025 5. How to become Whole in practice A very organic workshop, with the tone set on restoring balance of energies, that led to a very integrative practice ... just follow and enjoy! Naturalising our core and breathing responses with the 'right kind' of attention to what we are doing 25 January 2025 4. All you need to know... The wifi was unstable during this workshop, but somehow there was enough content to give you a lifetime of practice.... Several foundational ideas that can form the basis of a life-long practice 18 January 2025 3. Unifying core and ribs in action This one progressed from the foundation of previous workshops (the ribs using the ground for support and purchase),by bringing the 4 quadrants of the abdominal cavity into relating to whatever you are doing in space.... Relating to space from the lower half of the body (whilst grounding from the ribcage) 11 January 2025 2. Moving from the Heart p.2 The 4 quadrants of the ribcage stayed with me insistently following the first workshop of the year. And as usual, with more clarity came deeper explorations. This one was of the quiet freedom and strength that arise when 'heart -centered' movement is sourced in the relationship that the ribs and spine above the heart can have to the support beneath us, and how gravity and breath can cause that relationship. Grounding diagonally (from above the heart) 4 January 2025 1. Awakening movement from the spine of the heart The winter holidays gave me a chance to go deep into my own practice, and the outcome was an even deeper appreciation of the meaning of 'moving and centering from the heart'. This workshop explores how the ribcage can be considered as 4 quadrants that cross-relate to each other (with core support) to cause 'movement from the heart' - or specifically the centre of the thoracic curve. Overview WS 1 Course Part 1 Understanding what it actually means to be 'centred' at the Solar plexus... and discovering the potential released wave-like movements that occur when, from here, we can let go into support from the Earth and into the space we occupy. The Solar Plexus Course Part 3 From below and from above. Honing awareness in towards the centre of the whole spine, the Emperor/Empress of all other chakras, Anahata - the Heart, its base that anchors into the earth, and the throat's relationship to it from above, The Heart Course Part 5 Shambhavi mudra in practice The Third Eye, Root & Crown The Wave ~ contd. Discovering the wave from both the released arrival and surrender of the breath Overview WS 2 Course Part 2 Centering in the junctions between chakras. Understanding the Chakras as 'potentially elongating spaces' that can maintain their integrity throughout movement, when the points of their interaction can find direct support from contact. Neck and Throat Course Part 4 Centering in the junction between the Head and the Throat (so that the head can remain released in space whilst we release the body beneath it into the ground) The Head Course Part 6 Root & Crown , Head & Pelvis The Wave - Integration "What we experience is a direct result of what we think and do" Our bodies naturally respond directly to contact and to the space we find ourselves in - and the way it responds will be a direct reflection of the perceived nature of what we are feeling about both... Loving touch can make us soften, and feeling safe in the space we occupy allows to let go into it, aggressive contact will make us react and contract, and an unsafe environment will make us retract from space and hold ourselves together... What is missed in body-work is that the way that we engage with contact and the space we occupy is actually the determining factor in terms of the outcome for our bodies and our personal experience of being .that is the bio-feedback of our somatic experience. Over this course we will be delving deep into the nature of the body's natural responses to our relationships to both the earth beneath and world around us, to guide you towards a paradigm-shifting experience of what can happen when we can find the natural wave of fluid support that follows Enviro-Somatic integration You will build an invaluable resource for your own practice, based on the understanding that what we are experiencing through our bodies is a direct result of the quality of our own relationships to the world we live in together with the intent behind our actions. When we discover how the body responds to these integrated relationships to gravity, contact and the space we occupy, we awaken to the possibility of releasing into the outcome we choose- and the Wave is born."

Previous workshops (before April 2022) can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of the page Become a Gold/Platinum member for access Relating to space from within Another 'body-mapping' relationship that goes with natural whole-body function... 10th June 2023 Elbows from behind the chest, Knees from behind the navel All about the Solar Plexus I wasn't clear about what I wanted to share at the beginning of the workshop, so the first 15 mins or so was spent clarifying various things that people had picked up and wanted to re-experience (really good stuff - where the head is at, how to 'look out from your elbows :)', and other things... but then we got on to the Solar plexus and a deep dive into how the organs are supported in the right place when we centre from here... 3rd June 2023 Finding a grounded centre from which you can let go and fly All about the Neck This was a deep dive into the function of the atlas (first vertebra of the neck) and how our attention relates to how the head sits on the saddle of the atlas... if the head is to feel light, the rest of the body needs to be able to release down away from the head - A them you can apply to any posture. 27th May 2023 The Atlas - the way the head can always rest through the spine to the ground underneath you Understanding Hips & shoulders This was a particularly deep workshop, firstly exploring how hip and shoulder joints feel when the are free of 'bracing' against weight-carrying because of external support, followed by the activation of 'your breathing gear' to help you release space away from these girdles on the inside - leading to a direct relationship between the spine and whatever you wish to do in space with your hands and feet... 20th May 2023 The gateways to the spine A deep dive into hip opening... A deep and intense workshop that should change your felt-sense of the hips, and allow you to walk more naturally 13th May 2023 ... and how it translates into walking Breathing is a physical relationship to what you are doing.... The titles say it all... 6th May 2023 And releasing the breath gives you the opportunity to release into what you are doing. Relating to your support through the breath... I was on holiday and decided to put on a workshop from what I had been playing with in practice ... it felt entirely new, but when teaching it I realised it is simply a way of defining 'relationships to earth/relationships to space', as the things you do when breathe what you are doing - giving you an opportunity to let go into what you are doing, when you release the breath... 29th April 2023 Learning to release into what you are doing Inner Space, and Inner Strength This was a follow-on from the last Yoga Solutions session - exploring how the way we interact with external support gives us inner space, and how the breath can bring strength back to the centre without removing that space... lightness of being and freedom of movement through space is the result ... 15th April 2023 Practical ways to liberate inner space, and to trigger inner support Intent behind actions leads to your experience Here I explain the difference between 'doing TO' the body and engaging with the world THROUGH the body. Intent behind action leads to how the body responds. If we are clear that what we want is support from our outward actions, that leads to freedom and space within, then we also have the measure of what we are doing... 8th April 2023 Relationships to the world around us Postural strategies & the breath 2 This one continued on from the theme' i began on 'Yoga Solutions' (go watch it if you would like a shorter version of this theme) ... and I used the idea alongside some breath-retention practices to help everyone on screen with individual needs ... the instructions seemed to work for everyone. :-) 1st April 2023 How to take advantage of natural postural strategies The core, the ribs and the limbs An overview understanding of practice ... I end the session with a the face head and jaw massage that I have cut out and put on the blog for members 25th March 2023 The best way for you to interact with the ground beneath you and the space above and around you... A simple rule of thumb Practice can very easily be complicated by the way we 'look' at the body whilst practicing... here I explain how 'intent' is the real way that we organise the body's actions well, and offer a simple rule-of-thumb for your practice that can be your guide for an ever-improving experience of yourself. 18th March 2023 ... a way of staying clear in your intent during practice An ever deepening practice No words for this one ... too much content - just follow and you will have an evver-deepening experience 11th March 2023 Authenticity in movement I had no particular agenda on this one, but I started by sharing the practice I had done that morning - exploring uncontrived movement whilst maintaining a consistent quality of touch - and it led to a gentle and deep workshop that evoked the feeling of innocence in movement for myself and some of the others that attended. 4th March 2023 Developing the state of innocence. A workshop from first principles I had a couple of people on this workshop that were unfamiliar with working with me, so this was a good opportunity to get clear about the baseline principles, and the rule-of-thumb checklist of conditions that lead to the best experience and outcome. 25th February 2023 Discover the nature of your own body intelligence The breath as a sphere of support all around you I began with an overview explanation (in relatively pragmatic terms) of how and why the way we breath can determine whether we feel supported or not, and then guided a practice that gives you a direct somatic experience of it, followed by some posture work to explore how it works in action. 18th February 2023 A way of understanding ALL posture work A deep-dive into the hips I could call this 'part 3' of the theme I am currently on around the 'inwards/outwards' mode of practice. Here I actually start with the arms and shoulders, then move on to the legs and hips.... 11th February 2023 Finding ways of opening limbs that free up internal space A fourth dimension of practice (part 2) Continuing the theme that has arisen from the deep pranayama practice I have introduced, this workshop takes things into a physical practice that simplifies ALL posture work. 4th February 2022 Inwards/Outwards ... Where all directions meet for every point in the universe Inwards & Outwards - the hidden dimension. After an inspiration I had watching one of my quantum mechanics youtubes, I realised that the insane degree of complication involved in understanding such things could be resolved by simply adding another spacial dimension in the visualisation... and it was between inwards and outwards - and as always, I translated it into practice, and the outcome simplified everything for me (and for you if you follow this workshop) 28th January 2023 A single dimension of practice that unifies all other directions of engagement. From foundation principles to fullness of practice I had a newbie this week, which people always enjoy, because I get clear what principles I am basing my teaching on, together with a step-by-step building up of experience that allows you to understand it directly and somatically 21st January 2023 True Yoga in a nutshell Awakening primal movement through the breath Life body and mind all take a fair deal of managing just for maintenance. Body mind & soul should really be top priority. Here I share how to get down to the solution to all things, and at the end there is a meditation to give the soul what it needs. 14th January 2023 .... and a meditation to bring magic into your life The breath that surrounds you This workshop followed on from one of my more recent realisations... its actually the same as I have been teaching, only closer to its origin... Hard to explain in words, but I lead you in its practice. In many way I believe it becomes intuitively obvious and simple as you practice. 7th January 2023 A next level pranayama in practice New Year's Eve Special I had a fair number of new people on this one, so I began with appropriate intent behind practice, set up the rules-of-thumb for what we are trying to achieve, and led everyone through a few movements to explore. A Soul-enriching pranayama to end. 31st December 2022 Setting intent for practice AND for the year to come How the limbs and breath work together I begin gently and with subtlety in a seated twist to invite attention to drop into the place I like to work from, and then I take you into some familiar movements to try things out. 17th December 2022 Breaking down individual actions to put them back together harmoniously Forward bending Here I begin with reiterating, the baseline intent of liberating the spine from the job of carrying your weight, then guide you through some movements & postures that explore how your breathing gear (core/ribs/spine with the lungs at the centre) can move you comfortably into deep flexion, assisted by how you engage with support with your limbs. 10th Dec 2022 The core, the ribs, and how the limbs can help For the hips and sacrum... I began with an overview of my approach so that everyone was clear about what they were trying to achieve, followed by a workshop centred on being kind to the hips and sacrum. 26th November 2022 A way of thinking about the hips that triggers natural inner support, Reintegration from within A deep investigation into how the core and ribs work together in a unified way to allow movement sourced in support from the earth and freedom in space... Hard work, but worth it. 19th November 2022 Uniting the core , ribs and spine. A heart-opening workshop This workshop was a follow on from my yoga solutions exploration of 'natural spinal extension' 12th November 2022 wakening the use of the ribs for movement The limbs and the spine A broad-reaching workshop involving creating both inner space and inner support, naturally from the way we use our hands/feet, arms/legs. 5th November 2022 How the way you use your arms & legs can liberate the upper spine and sacrum. Through your joints in extension Same instructions - but relaxed extension is the outcome. 29th October 2022 Learning how to release the habitual bracing of the groins/psoas/lumbars and the head/neck/throat in an extending spine Awakening the upper spine This workshop was centred on arm movements that awaken the use of the true rib cage (top half) and upper thoracic spine. The purpose being to release the neck and shoulders... 15th October 2022 The deep responsive work of the rib cage and shoulders. Understanding the Breath part 2 In this second part, I explained the real meaning of 'the breath itself is designed to support you'; and guided the very small group in how to discover the natural responses that make this a possibility... 8th October 2022 The breath is how you are supported in space... Understanding the breath part 1 I began with a deep and clear overview of why I am so involved with the breath for all posture work... a MUST! 1st October 2022 A masterclass on the nature of breathing A guided experience into the wholeness of practice This workshop was after I had recovered from a particularly difficult episode of flu ... sometimes these difficulties bring a brand new sense of clarity once you have 'returned to yourself' 17th September 2022 All you need to understand the work - somatically A neck masterclass The title explains it - offering an ongoing solution to neck pain through developing a more direct relationship to everything around you from the spine. 3rd September 2022 Relating to support and space directly from the spine A general feel-good workshop Reclining, twisting, seated boat pose, and some standing... all the principles in a relatively casual flow. 20th August 2022 The ground, the breath and the space you occupy within and without The value of the retained breath This one began with a little bit of straight-forwards foot work in standing, followed by an explanation of why I practice breath retention.., The workshop that followed was fantastic. 13th August 2022 .... learning how to 'float' The diaphragm, and developing the natural support of the breath This was a rather clear workshop on the role of the breath in support, taking you , step-by-step, into how you can liberate the spine from the onerous task of lifting and carrying your weight... 23rd July 2022 A deeper understanding A mystery workshop :-) I took a while to post this one up, so I don't actually remember the content, although I do remember it being rather fabulous ... and at the end I share my very personally discovered daily morning pranayama ( life changing!) 9th July 2022 Try it to discover the content Support from your 'breathing gear' A small workshop that goes deep. Real solutions for difficult neck/shoulders, and a real way of opening the hips. The meditation/relaxation at the end was a deep direct exploration of how the chakras meet and link to each other within. 2nd July 2022 ... followed by a meditation on the chakras The infinite space within This was unusually deep, even for me! I began with a 'centering exercise' that set the tone of the workshop, and we went on to explore (one of the best) ways into shoulder stand, and how to discover and free up your hips, followed by one of the deepest meditation/relaxations I have ever led. (The relaxation will be up on 'the ultimate anti-stress' course soon - free for all premium members) 19th June 2022 Discovering the true meaning of 'being centred" Breathing solutions On this Yoga Solutions Workshop, knees, lower back, psoas tension, upper spine and neck issues were all covered, with practice based on following what happens when you let go of your weight to allow the breath to arrive - the solution for the part of the body attended to follows the release of the breath together with a trust of your earth. 11th June 2022 Some part of you needs to heal? ... The breath is the answer A Yoga Solutions full workshop This was a workshop with just a few people, so I thought I would do a ‘yoga solutions’ style workshop where I offered so practices that centred on bringing natural harmony and strength to each area of the body that the participants were interested in… 4th June 2022 Freedom at the centre of the body; Ankles, knees & hips; Neck shoulders & head A thoroughly enlightening workshop This workshop was after one of my ‘downloads’ that made sense of everything. And I believe I make practical sense of it all for the participants (in that I think my guidance takes you into a direct somatic experience of the advantages of unifying each of these planes of attention) 28th May 2022 Up & down, left & right, forwards & back, within and without. Support from within and without A content-rich workshop that dives deep into the deeper responses of the 'breathing gear', to the support that can be found from the earth and the space we occupy. 21st May 2022 The intelligence of the body's responses to support Rediscovering the strength of youth This workshop began with me explaining my emphasis on 'moving from the core', followed by an exploration of this principle in some simple movements. We also compared this with deriving support from the limbs, then married them together into a powerful workshop that should rejuvenate you! 14th May 2022 Moving from the core A relaxing opening for the hips This one was a shorter workshop because there were only a few participants and everyone was a bit tired! ... What evolved was a deeply relaxing start off practice with some deep exploration of potential freedoms in the hips with sensitive organisation of the 'breathing gear' within the pelvis. 7th May 2022 A short & gentle workshop The true power of the breath This workshop was with a few of my regulars that have been working with me for a while, so I was able to go deep into the reality of how exactly the breath can be the 'set up' for a brand new experience of support during its release. We started with child pose and moved through dog and reclining twists to build up the possibility of releasing the weight from the spine, and moved on to malasana (squat), finishing with an intense pranayama practice to work on the 'chakras' 30th April 2022 Liberation for the spine, chakras, hips, shoulders & neck.... A simple rule-of-thumb to transform any practice This was my first teaching after taking a personal retreat, over which time I re-discovered the value of 'putting yourself aside' in favour of direct exploration of 'what is'. The outcome was a return to one of my first-principle practices of 'equal touch', and a deep exploration of what happens when this is applied to every breath.... Exploring sun salute, reclining bridge and twists and a hip-freeing/strengthening exercise to re-invent tree pose... 23rd April 2022 Grounding is a function of the breath The breath and support (incl. headstand) This workshop began with a simple exploration of the difference between 'lifting' parts of the body and 'using the ground to release into space'... The way to 'use' the ground is to find a breathing relationship to it. The outcome is an awakening of the core and spine that offers a completely different experience of how the body can move... 9th April 2022 Awakening movement from the centre Click here for the list Previous Workshops All Workshops from March 2020-2022 Anchor 1

  • Yoga Physical Therapy | Scaravelli Yoga Teacher Mentoring | The Acquaviva Way

I am Marc J Acquaviva, Scaravelli Yoga Practitioner for over 40 yrs. I specialise in helping people find solutions for longterm physical limitations, including old and more recent injuries. I also offer a Yoga Teacher Mentoring service & 1:1 guidance for anyone on the Yoga path. Online & in Hove UK. top Are you looking for something more from your Yoga ? Are you open to a fresh perspective ? Do you want to heal your body? Welcome to a very different way of understanding your body ... it is a way that your body will recognise. And with time & practice, it will be your body that teaches you everything you need to know, for a pleasurable life that is life well-led. - A 10 minute explanation of the way I work and why - About Marc I have been passionate about yoga since early childhood (since 1968), and from 1991 I studied and practiced exclusively with people that have worked directly with Vanda Scaravelli, such as Diane Long and Sophy Hoare, as well as with the highly respected osteopaths that have been called to further understanding of her work, such as Pete Blackaby and John Stirk. During my earlier intensive yoga study years, in the spirit of following Vanda Scaravelli's own influences, I also explored and have drawn great value from other wellbeing practices, such as Feldenkrais Qi Gong, Thai yoga massage, Tantra and various different meditative practices. Unable to imagine doing anything else with my life, I eventually decided to teach, and qualified in 2000 with Natural Bodies of Brighton, doing Gary Carter's anatomy for yoga course. I actually began to develop my own take on the work after suffering from a prolapsed disc whilst doing the training. The prolapse meant I wasn't able to walk, but I found that it was possible, through my own innate somatic sense of the structural relationships involved, to relieve the symptoms and restore function... I 'healed' the prolapse for myself within a few weeks, and I have been developing and using my unique approach (based on 'what actually works) to help others ever since. More recently (2019/2020), in realising that my work involves an entirely different understanding of how a natural body actually works, I coined the term 'Enviro-Somatic' as a description of the methodology. It refers to the fact that someone's experience of themselves through the body, is a direct reflection of the way they physically respond to the environment they find themselves in, which in turn is influenced by how they feel, what they think and believe about what they are doing and why, and many other 'subtle' aspects of who they are as a person... more...

  • Embodied Living 1 | Acquaviva School of Yoga | Online Yoga Course

Embodied Living 1 - the fundamental principles. This is the first of a series of 6-week online yoga courses designed to transform your day to day life Embodied Living - 1 Scroll the Principles of Practice Free access for Platinum members .... a 7-week course to change your life Content 7 videos approx 90 mins each Cost: £47 ~ Enroll now Ask a question top description Introducing Acquaviva Yoga These recordings of my live online 6-week courses are designed to give you a complete guided tour of the body, bringing awareness to key relationships through action and breath, using simple functional postures and movements as the framework . Week by week you be guided in specific practices that bring you directly in touch with the body's innate intelligence. The course acts as structured support for the process that this initiates. I offer new ways of understanding movement and support, that will greatly enhance your practice, whether you are a complete beginner or experienced Yoga practitioner from any style of practice. Sessions are around 90minutes each - there are 7 sessions in total and you will have access for life. The live courses were run with one session per week, and I strongly recommend organising this same structure for yourself: Each week (at the same time if you can) watch and participate in the workshop of the week, giving yourself the following 6 days to practice and apply the principles. The courses are constructed to work in this way, and if you overload with too much information by moving on too quickly you will simply miss the process. During the first 45-60 minutes of each session, I will guide you through specific practices and relationships based on the theme for the week. The second part of the session involves Q & A with the live participants, and I offer practical yoga solutions. People that go through the recorded version of this course have said that this part is just as relevant to their in-the-moment practice as if they were there live. With the recordings, you also have the advantage of being able to pause, rewind and redo parts that catch your attention. To make the most of this course, my advice would be to practice a little bit daily. 10 or 15 minutes will do, although if you are enjoying it, and have the time to do more I have found that there is no actual limit to how long I could practice if I wanted to. If you start with something that caught your interest on the session, the body will begin to remind you of other things.. It could be a principle, a direction of attention, or some relationship that I invite you to explore. If this kind of awareness finds its way into your daily life, then you will have begun the process of embodied living. It is quite a natural outcome of the practice, but only if you invite it. It is this that changes people's lives - there is an empowerment that comes with listening directly to the body's own intelligence. It gives us accurate clues about how we truly feel about things, and its voice can act as the wisest of guides through life. It is this particular realisation and experience that my students find to be one of most profound benefits of practice. - Marc J Acquaviva - This Course If you have access, click below to enter the class Introductory Workshop General Principles of Practice Session 1 Making friends with your touch. Session 2 Making Space Session 3 Finding your Centre Session 4 The Practice - finding your flow Session 5 The Breath is the key Session 6 Letting go into the outcome! What sort of experience or fitness do I need to follow this course? No experience is required, and no particular level of health is needed for you to begin a journey that will improve both health and quality of life. This work is appropriate for everyone from total beginner with a curiosity about the body-mind relationship, through to fully experienced teachers looking for new depth, new inspiration and real solutions to the common issues encountered in yoga. The baseline requirement is a willingness to explore new ways of looking at things, together with a desire for change. How long do I have access to the course? You should have access for life - as long as the internet and the Acquaviva School of Yoga are alive. Each course promises to change my relationships to body and mind... How do these courses differ from each other? That's a big question! Before you experience it the best answer I can give is this: The principles behind my work involve working out how to create the conditions that will allow ANY body to find deeper integration. I have discovered and have been working with 6 fundamental conditions, each of which offers its own path to freedom with practice and time, and each could be considered a 'type' of yoga. But when practiced in conjunction and in natural sequence, effectiveness of practice is off-the-scale, and transformation is inevitable. Each Course takes your through the entirety of these Conditions in sequence, but each individual Course, in sequence, centres around one of the fundamental principles. Also, I am responding in the moment to the live participants, so specific content will be guided by specific groups. Basically, principle-based content is infinitely expandable despite being based on simple principles (in the same way that you can look at the same thing from an infinite number of angles)... I hope that answer wasn't too confusing! You will understand how it works and evolves, as soon as you have experienced one course. In the process I discovered that there were other ways of relating to the body, and to life, that can almost instantly relieve the symptoms of a wide range of very common physical issues, and my discoveries have allowed me to help others also become free of theirs. In practicing new relationships, the issues simply fade away, along with the historic complications that put the issue in place, so the natural outcome is nothing less than personal transformation. And this is possible for absolutely anyone that is willing to apply themselves to what I have discovered. I have been sharing my work with people since 1999. Its effectiveness has led me to define my own style (and School) of Yoga: running courses, workshops, retreats and teacher trainings. My mission is to spread this work as far as I can, and with the advancement of online technology, this is becoming more possible. At 58 I feel like I am at the beginning of my life! and I want to share this possibility with the rest of the world. contact CONTACT US Top of page Sign up here to join our Newsletter Feel free to connect with Marc and Abigail and they will be happy to respond to any questions you might have . There were two courses running concurrently on this theme, and although the themes of each are based on the same principles, the delivery and specific content was geared to each participating group, so each of these courses shine a light on the same subject from a different angle, often working with different relationships of the body. As always, these recordings of my live online 6-week courses are designed to give you a complete guided tour of the body, bringing awareness to key relationships through action and breath, using simple functional postures and movements as the framework. Sessions are around 90minutes each. Once you have access to a recorded session, you have access for life. 45-60 minutes of each session, I guide you through specific practices and relationships based on the theme for the week. Either at the beginning or end of the session I invite Q & A with the live participants, and I offer ideas and practical yoga solutions to whatever is going on for them. - Marc J Acquaviva - This Course If you have access, click below to enter the class Session 1 - Action & Outcome Session 2 - Owning your space Session 3 - Moving & Living from the heart Session 4- The Pulse - finding natural rhythm Session 5 - The Breath is the answer Session 6 - Letting go into the outcome Bonus Meditation What sort of experience or fitness do I need to follow this course? Here I give you a way of providing that for yourself directly, simply by using your hands for support. 'Inner support' is similarly a description of a somatic experience that will mean very different things to different people depending on what efforts and tensions they are accustomed to... So I also offer an approach to the same thing as above (as your starting point) to set things up so that the breath itself can give you the most natural inner support you can develop, which in turn offers you a strength that leaves you free in your movements through space... Here I offer a simple explanation of how the limbs most naturally support us. And when we do so, we illicit more natural whole-body actions and end up with supportive relationships from our touch all the way back through to our spines. Then I guide your through applying these relationships in your practice. Enroll for this this class Your class is here 10% of proceeds goes to Heart Twickenham Opening the Hips Stiff hips? Tight lower back? This one is for you. 'Hip opening postures' often have the opposite effect for people.... they try and stretch their hips open, and the outcome leaves them even tighter in the groins/psoas/adductors & lower back. Here I unravel the problem and show you what 'hip opening' actually feels like, so that you can carry a new relationship to your hips with you, that will ALLOW them to open. A regular question i get is about how to be free in the shoulders... but whenever I run workshops in new places with large groups of people, one of the things not asked is 'how to reach up with the arms during sun salute'... Yet absolutely everyone in the room is lifting their arms with their shoulders and neck when they come up... which is exactly what gives them the tight shoulders in the first place. I start with a 5 minute trick that will get you to understand how shoulders are supposed to move, and then take you into more depth so it can be applied to postures (reclining eagle & Triangle) Enroll for this this class Your class is here 10% of proceeds goes to Heart Twickenham UNDERSTANDING THE BREATH IN POSTURE WORK Practice with this for a little while - it could well be one of the most significant short classes you've ever done! Many teachers recognise the importance of the breath in posture work, yet breathing practices (aka pranayama), are mostly practiced 'separately' because it is considered as 'advanced' compared to posture work. However, if we are free to explore how the breath is naturally involved in active support whilst preparing for a posture, it makes complete sense of the purpose of pranayama. And understanding the true nature of the breath, makes complete sense of how to experience the true nature of postures ! Recognising the natural movements we need to develop Developing natural core responsiveness 7th December 2024 I began with an explanation of why people 'lose energy' and a detailed explanation of how the breath can be 'anti-gravity'. With this current (long-term!) group, I am finding each workshop gets closer to offering the self-empowerment of understanding your practice. .... and working with first principles Listening to what the body wants 1st December 2024 I started this workshop with a reminder that my work, and therefore your practice, is ALWAYS based on first principles (eg. learning to do things without holding your weight up with the spine). And then, because it was a small workshop, I was able to guide the participants into an exploratory practice that would reveal the meaning and deliver the result of this first principle (for the neck) A strange practice that makes sense of everything How to actually be free in the head and neck 23rd November 2024 A very small but powerful workshop - a masterclass in using sitting to activate deep freedoms and support. Seated postures & redressing scoliotic holding patterns Length space & support for the waist 9th November 2024 This was a deep exploration of how gravity-based released balance can invite the breathing to support you in movement towards uprightness with only release in the lower back and neck (I only have the group recording for this one) A shamanic journey that changes everything Learning to let go into uprightness 2nd November 2024 A very small workshop which led to some bespoke 'yoga solutions' - but because it was such a small class I could really go deep into the depth of attention and pace that can allow real changes in the body-mind-breath relationship. Your practice at home - going through the process that allows you to listen to and meet the body's needs. A very private practice 26th October 2024 This was a very inspiring workshop, spurred on by questions and experiences of participants.... A deep inquiry into all things Yoga, Life & being Human 19th October 2024 A deep dive into the subject... its the stuff i usually teach, but this was a direct exploration of how we create the best relationships - which in turn instigates all the other things I share in my teaching How to use the limbs so that you are supported by the breath Relationships to the world that support you 12th October 2024 .'Letting go' is a simple idea, but surprisingly difficult to actually do. The issue is support - but when the movements of the breath become strong enough to become that support , there is a radical shift in how you and your body operate together. - in what it means to let go. A masterclass 5th October 2024 'Moving from the core' is something that I am always inviting people to explore - however, the way you use your limbs goes with how your core and breathing operate. If you can find the best 'relationships' to your outward actions through the limbs, 'moving from the core' becomes an emergent quality.... Relationships to what you're doing in space that lead to core activation & support Elbows knees, wrists & ankles 27th Sept 2024 This workshop started with a deep learning - it was pretty much a ted talk about how joints get to a state of continuous complaint, and how sublimely simple it is to redress, no matter how long-term, if we can understand these 'things' as relationships.... A shift in perspective that will change your practice for ever An understanding of how to heal any joint I had no agenda for this workshop, then a simple question about 'wrists', launched us into a deep-dive into wrists and ankles (being different from hands and feet) and how the pairings can give you bi-directional support all the way through to the spine. The gateways to inner support. The magic of wrists & ankles... 7th September 2024 This was another deep dive workshop to develop all the mutually supportive relationships between hands, wings, ribs and face, that make for free movement from the upper spine. A deep and effective approach to 'putting your hands down for back bend' that explores all the relationships together so that the spine behind the heart can feel the direct support of the hands. Integrating the Arms 24th August 2024 Because I am posting this late, I needed to watch some of it to remind myself what it is about. Found myself attending the workshop because my body enjoyed engaging with it almost by osmosis. The most natural way to develop 'yoga awareness' Inward action/outward release....Outward action/inward release 17th August 2024 .... The title explains it The way the limbs cause natural pranayama Wrists & Ankles, Shoulders & Hips 3rd August 2024 This workshop focussed on getting accurate about the most supportive and comfortable relationships between the Head, face, use of the hands (and wings), and the ribcage/thoracic spine.... When they all have a mutually supportive relationship to each other in space, then the release/surrender of the breath will, by itself, cause the elongation of the spine as you let go of your weight,... (I tried it out in headstand) The Head/Face, hands/Wings, and the Rib-cage/Spine Integrating the upper body 28th July 2024 This workshop started with 'finding the appropriate attitude of the head' - to discover the actual physical orientation of the head on the first vertebra that allow the head and neck to relax in movement, and morphed into paying attention to where the space behind the navel sits in relation to support, and how the heart can also be at this centre (which allows all 3 to remain quiet and supported during movement. The 3 main centres of grounded support Head Heart & Navel 6th July 2024 This was in response to requests from a participant that noticed her hips complained a bit after walking. So we did some practices to open the hips and then took that awareness into standing and walking. Something at the end for neck and shouilders. And how its the ribs that free them up All about the hips 29th June 2024 The title explains it, The practice is very intense, but if you find it directly, you'll never want to do things any other way, ... is in the relationships between your face/head, how you use your arms, and your ribcage/breath A perfectly free neck... 22nd June 2024 This was a small workshop (because of website error on my part), but the few that tried the link anyway got a rather deep class. I talked a little about how the body is always letting you know what you need, and the best mental framework for 'listening' to what it's saying. And of course a guided practice to show how it works. So follow it to be calmed, but absorb the baseline instructions, and it will serve you in your practice for life. A practical way to bring you back to the centre of things. 'Breathing what you are doing' 15th June 2024 This workshop was about looking after the main joints of the limbs ... When employed this way, the breathing actions of the core & ribs become the centre of your support, and hands and feet become the support for your breathing actions. Outcome is freedom and strength... ...powered by hips and shoulders back away from them Knees & elbows in space... 8th June 2024 I began the workshop talking about how my intention behind practice has shifted over time, and then guided everyone in 'Mahapranayamasana' - a powerful practice that is done lying down. The guidance on this one shows how much work can be done (and benefits can be gained from doing so) in a single 15 minute practice. The rest of it was just exploring different things employing the benefits we discovered. Mahapranayamasana ... The simplest posture for the deepest practice. About your personal relationship to practice 1st June 2024 I am posting this a while after, so I have forgotten the specifics, but we tried reclining leg extension and twists, and took the same feeling into standing postures.... I do remember that we explored a relationships between the ribs and the outer edges of the hands and feet on the same side.... and then the opposite side of the ribs can put the inner edges of the feet and and hands down. Learning to move and balance with strong support from how your breath moves It's the ribs that put the feet down! 25th May 2024 A couple of new positions to properly open out the psoas and free up the contents of the pelvis and waist, together with an exploration of side-bends vs turning or twisting, to help understand how to be free, long and supported in the neck and waist.... Generating space for the waist and neck Hips & Neck 18th May 2024 .... I also did something to help explore turning from the upper body without pulling on the neck - Which is an activity of mobile ribs with support from the core. All of these things can (and should be) be supported by the breath, so I incorporated pranayama practices (easy for those familiar with 'The Sacred Breath' course). And when the free-hip walking was revisited, the mobility of the upper body and ribcage made more natural sense of things for everyone.... Reinventing walking without hip tension Hips & shoulders 4th May 2024 This workshop I set the scene for the upcoming course by taking the small group through 3 kriya-type pranayamas that help you develop the core responsiveness needed for 'your breath to become your support'... I will add this to the 'Sacred Breath' course so that all premium members can run through this. A prequel to the 'Chakra Course' (September 2024) Pranayama & Posture 27th April 2024 After experiencing a week of needing deep and strong pranayama work to support the changes around the base of my spine after freeing up the thoracic spine, I was further encouraged to put on the course on chakras I have in my sights.... today was a bit of an explanation of how it works, together of course with a direct experience of why we need to pay attention to these things (and the breathing choices that invite them) in terms of physical practice.... A taster for the upcoming course September 2024 The support centres for our chakras I uploaded this the following week, so I don't remember the content ... people enjoyed as usual so follow to find out. Enjoy! The second workshop from Barcelona 13th April 2024 On this workshop, a large proportion of the group were experiencing recovery from illness and other debilitating situations, so I built a workshop that addressed the discomfort at source, and participants could either apply the same principles to postures directly, or to the imagined intention of engaging with the posture - leading to outcomes that were almost the same. .... how to integrate the breath into everything you do. Not an easy one, but rewarding if you are in the mood for some hard work. ...standing postures & seated forward bends Using postures to develop space & inner support 10th February 2024 This was really a follow on from last week's workshop. This happens quite regularly for me - I come up with a theme because of some practical realisation in practice, then a week later I am discovering more and more value from it, and deeper ramifications from its practice... Enjoy! ...Solving the need to trade these off against each other Length in the waist, length in the sides of the neck... 27th January 2024 This whole workshop was about exploring all aspects of yoga from a first-principle basis... We started with some simple rolling around to remind ourselves of first principles, then took that into some strong postures (chair pose, warrior, triangle etc), building up each from the same principles. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and felt great after :-) ...free-flow movement and strong postures Some natural practice 30th January 2024 The title says it all really.. The workshop goes into practices that first create the space, then invites support to travel back into the spine behind the heart, so that we can understand how to move from there to experience the freedom at both ends. The naturalisation of this way of doing things relies on the breath. ... sourced in movement into and from the centre - the spine behind the heart. Space and freedom at both ends of the body.... 13th January 2024 I started the workshop with an anecdote about my experience of my body when i am feeling less than happy, compared to when i'm feeling great. The somatic difference is to do with engagement from within (which happens more naturally when you're feeling happy or enthused or something). Its important to go WITH what the body is saying to you, but if you want to change how you feel, it can happen naturally by awakening the stuff I always talk about - because that is the inner support that allows your periphery to both relax and fly into expression of what you are doing, simply because you are breathing it. ... to release into outward action. Awakening the inner support... 6th January 2024 It was a small group on this one, and the workshop became a deeper exploration of my yoga solutions class on 'happy hips - releasing the Psoas and Illio-Psoas'. The workshop ended with something for the shoulders and neck (which goes with and allows integration of the thing that releases the hips) .... bringing supportive responses away from the periphary and towards the centre... Happy hips part 2 16th December 2023 I started this workshop with no agenda, and as is often the way, it led to a pivotal workshop that brought a solution to the ubiquitous problem of 'thinking' your way into yoga. Shambhavi mudra is a 'yoga trick' with the eyes that can bypass binary thinking and bring you directly into the body. And 'the bhandas' can be developed naturally through an understanding of the movements and natural engagement of your core, ribs and diaphragm through grounded breathing. Shambhavi mudra (2 versions) & the bhandas Two MAJOR yoga practices to transform your practice for good. 9th December 2023 A deep and comprehensive workshop for anyone wanting to open the upper spine, whilst freeing up the neck & shoulders and resoliving lower back/sacrum issues as you go ..whilst taking care of the sacrum/lower back Opening the spine 2nd December 2023 It is useful to understand how the hips & lower back best work together, and how the head neck & shoulders can do that at the other end of the body, but the only way they can both settle naturally into these improved relationships is when movement and support is sourced in the space between them - the middle - the core & ribcage. This would lead to an 'exercise' for them UNLESS, they get involved in using the ground that supports you and the space you are moving into. And the way they naturally do that is when you can let go of holding your weight up with the spine..... It is the source solution to neck/shoulders & hips/lower back. Your centre... 25th November 2023 I remember this being a pivotal workshop that invites clarity about what it means to 'move from the spine & heart' Moving from the heart The breastbone & the spine 18th November 2023 Anyone with neck & shoulder issues, with any degree of scoliosis (most of us have somewhere in the spine that is off to one side), or just 'heaviness' in the body - the solution for you is to awaken the ribgage in movement and support. It goes with non-sedentary breathing, and also with a whole-hearted engagement with life. This workshop explores these things in practice. Your natural source of lightness and strength. Awakening the ribcage (and thoracic spine) 21st October 2023 There was a confluence of requests about the area at the top of the shoulders... the solution is movement from the nearby spine, which we explored in whole body movements and some postures. Towards the end of the session we explored moving directly from the bit of spine that was previously stuck - leading to an experience of all the movements and relationships that we had practiced in order to release the spine in the first place. Liberating the upper spine into extension from above down All bout the neck 14th October 2023 A gentle and deep exploration of natural breathing and how it can lead to ease and support in posture work... together with a section specifically on looking after the knees. • Student Experience of 121 Mentoring & Yoga Therapy with Marc | Acquaviva | Hove | Online |

What is a 121 with Marc like? Get the student experience of in-person and online classes for real results in your practice and your body wisdom. top The Student Experience of 121s 121 Yoga Mentoring with Marc ~ in person or online Whether you are just starting your yoga , or have been practicing most of your life, Marc offers expert guidance that will help you build a practice and a way of physically engaging with life that will massively expand your horizons at the same time as best serving your ongoing needs. Check Availability Yoga is a moment-to-moment practice of being entirely present to what is. So if the purpose is transformation, the only way to guide it is in direct response to people that are right there in front of you. And when I get to do this 121, I can follow every nuance, every breath, and guide things to a point of total integration. The outcome can be mind-blowing for the individual, and deeply satisfying for me. Rachel Walsh Hi Guys! As most of you know i have been dealing with a rotator cuff injury. To begin with i couldn't lift my arm at all and was in a lot of pain doing the most simple of things (putting a jacket on was quite special) BUT i have been lucky enough to spend some with Marc J Acquaviva just one hour last week and half an hour yesterday. Not only have i got a full range of motion back in my shoulder but i feel like for the first time perhaps ever i am really living inside my body and there is a new connection there in terms of my yoga practice like i've learning to move for the first time all over again... It's fucking amazing. Anyway i'll stop rambling on now and say EVERYONE MUST GO AND SEE HIM. About Online 121 Tutoring Hands-on is a very rapid way of transmitting the work, but Marc also offers an online service via Zoom for those that don't live nearby. The outcome is surprisingly effective. Marc discovered that even online he could pick up on the most subtle of nuances in people's movement and simply 'read' what was going on for them as if they were directly in the room with him, so can offer clear, userful instructions for your practice in your own home. Check Availability Online vs. in person... Some people prefer the experience of online work with Marc, simply because physical progress is at precisely the rate that the mind can assimilate things. Without hands-on, Marc's job is to find ways of expressing things that makes sense to the individual, and the changes in the body follow the development of understanding. Those that prefer in-person and hands-on are generally more eager to have a new and direct experience of the relationships that Marc gives people. With direct hands-on sessions, there can be enormous physical transformations, but understanding is more somatic than intellectual, so although the body changes rapidly, it is the understanding that develops with practice. Either way, online is a very effective way of directly working 121 with Marc. You can do it in the comfort of your own home and sessions can be recorded. Check Availability Yoga Therapy - Solutions-based support for remedial issues Groundbreaking new bodywork - directtly with tts originator Marc developed his unique approach to practice by resolving a myriad of postural and joint issues of his own directly through practice, and he has since expanded the remedial aspect of his work in many directions. At first he extrapolated the principles that he used to relieve chronic symptoms of sciatica and a collapsing knee-joint, into solving other joint and postural complications that he hadn't personally experienced. When he applied his technique in manually guiding others, it worked so well that he was encouraged to take things further. He went on to develop solutions for common complications such as migraine, fibromyalgia, ME & chronic fatigue, even osteoarthritis in fingers, fallen arches and bunions, and of course the ubiquitous problems of hips and shoulders backs and necks - pretty much most things. Problems with organ function? He can also help you modify practice so that you can safely and effectively develop your health through practice, even if there is a specific organ issue going on (heart disease, liver disease, kidney problems etc etc.). People’s experience is generally that health can then improve because of the practice, and the specific relationships given also allow organ function to improve. Does it really work ? There are hundreds of people out there who have experienced massive improvement directly, through 121s, on his Courses, the occasional spontaneous healing on a workshop, and even once in a while on a group class online. Without extensive blind-testing with thousands of people to 'prove it' in medical terms, the only evidence that is works is anecdotal and by word of mouth... (there are a few of the most recent testimonials below) However Marc insists that he is not 'doing the healing' - he says that he is simply helping to 'Create the Conditions that allow the body to heal itself .' Check Availability What to expect from a Yoga Therapy session with Marc The way that Marc works with these things is entirely in response to each individual. It will depend on things such as the degree of the issue, and of the discomfort that goes with it, the amount that the issue is impacting on life, and how much and how quickly the person wishes to be free of the complication. If it is a result of an injury or surgical procedure, the age of the issue will be a factor. And of course the state of body-mind that the person is in at the time... Yoga Therapy can be entirely gifted to the person, as gentle, supportive manipulations (there is no 'cracking' of joints or any other hard manipulations required). It can be done fully clothed and cushioned by a few yoga mats. As the recipient, you can simply relax and allow Marc to do the work for you... he will occasionally ask you to breathe into what he is doing, or to visualise something particular as he works with you, but it can be a virtually passive experience (and you can ask for that if it is what you are looking for) If you are ready for it and it is appropriate, he will also give you specific things to do, where you can practice the relationships for yourself. And it will be this that takes it beyond simple relief, towards a complete and longterm solution - ie. a life untroubled by the issue (and you can request this too if it is your preference) The majority of physical issues end up being directly healed by the process. Others become reminders to practice - in that when you return to the 'old' way of doing things, the body will remind you by re-presenting the 'old' issue. However, once you have physically reminded yourself of better ways of 'being', symptoms simply disappear again with the practice. If you wish to make your 121 session with Marc a Yoga Therapy session, you simply click the ' This is Yoga Therapy session ' box before you select your spot. And it is probably a good idea to let Marc know what the issue is, so that he can directly work out what you need beforehand. Check Availability Check Availability If you want to know how I do it, I simply guide people's bodies to place where there is no longer the condition of 'conflict' between parts itself. The new relationsips I give people will by definition, be 'different', but in some other way the person will recognise it as 'right' because the somatic sense in that moment, as well as being unfamiliar, will have the quality of ease, together with a marked absense of the usual symptoms. I then show people how to stay in these relationships in action - yes, in 'postures' but mostly in day to day life, which includes what they actually like to do in life. This new relationship to what they do, and to life itself, then becomes their Practice. And it also becomes their very own Yoga. Yoga therapy what to epect

No experience is required, and no particular level of health or flexibility is needed for you to begin a journey that will improve both health and quality of life. How long do I have access to a course? Each Course takes your through the entirety of these Conditions in sequence, but each individual Course, in sequence, centres around one of the first three fundamental principles. Frequently asked questions Meet the author of the approach Marc J Acquaviva Yoga saved my soul... I returned to my childhood passion of yoga at the age of 30 in1991, practicing in the 'Scaravelli-inspired' style , and I used the fundamental principle of 'listening to the song of the body' to find my way out of a great deal of chronic physical pain. In the process I discovered that there were other ways of relating to the body, and to life, that can almost instantly relieve the symptoms of a wide range of very common physical issues, and my discoveries have allowed me to help others also become free of theirs. In practicing new relationships, the issues simply fade away, and the historic complications that put the issue in place can simply dissolve in the light , so the natural outcome is nothing less than personal transformation. I'm fast approaching 60 and I feel like I am at the beginning of my life! and I want to share this possibility with the rest of the world. author

Anchor 1 Our proprioceptive nervous system is a sophisticated part of our sensory intelligence, that is not only responsible for know where parts of ourselves are in space in relationship to each other, but it is also capable of mapping out the actual space around us. The way we physically respond to the space we occupy is written by each of our uniquely individual histories - causing us to retract from contact or from space in some parts of ourselves, and to push defiantly outwards in others. All of us hold combinations these patterns of responses in the way we move and breathe, which in turn dictates how we feel within ourselves. This is where an intelligent approach to Yoga can step in - If we can become directly present to how we are physically relating to space we occupy, we can objectively shift our engagements. The result will be an entirely different experience of our environment, which leads to an entirely different experience of being in our bodies . What to expect : On the introductory workshops, I will offer general guidance on the practical aspects of 'working with space' together with an overview of some of the most common 'retractions' that lead to postural holding patterns. I will also be including some specific pranayama practices to help you find the direct experience of 'support from space'. What people say .... Alison Koslowski (Edinburgh) “The online class format worked really well and I was surprised how much it allowed me to deepen my practice - perhaps even more than an in person class. The course has totally rewired my perception of my spine in really helpful and fun ways. It has given me loads to work with! I look forward to going back over the videos of the classes again…and again…” Over the 6 course sessions, together with the included 121s, I will be guiding each of you explore particular relationships to space that will free you of the need to 'hold yourself up' , and over the course, we will cover the patterns of engagement from all of the major articulations of the limbs and body and each of the key areas of the spine. Each session will begin with an introduction to the specific theme of the workshop and move into a guided physical practice. The framework will be a few specific key functional movements and yoga postures (and if you are a live participant you can also bring other things you would like to explore to the table). There is usually between 15 and 30 minutes of Q&A, a summary of the day's principle and its application to both your practice and your life, and usually we have time for a guided deep relaxation. If you just try out the base-line content by taking the intro workshops only (both for only £25) or if you would go straight for the full course (just £197, but this also includes 3 121s), you can expect both your body mapping, and your spacial awareness to improve immensely. You will discover surprising new patterns of connection together with subsequent new freedoms in the breath and in movement And as part of your course, you need to claim your free 121 time with me to iron out any confusions or specific sticking points in your practice or somatic understanding. (NB. 121s are not included with intro-only attendance ) By the end of the course, your body will have changed, and you will have a brand new somatic embodiment of 'how to' in approach to body work of any kind, either for your own practice, or for how you work with others. During his intensive yoga study years, in the spirit of following Vanda Scaravelli's influences, Marc also explored and has drawn from other wellbeing practices, such as Feldenkrais Qi Gong and Thai yoga massage. After 8 years or so he eventually decided to teach, and qualified in 2000 with Natural Bodies of Brighton, doing Gary Carter's anatomy for yoga course. He developed his own unique take on the work after suffering from a prolapsed disc during training. The prolapse meant he wasn't able to walk, but he found that it was possible, through his own innate somatic sense of the body-relationships involved, to relieve the symptoms and restore function... He 'healed' the prolapse for himself within a few weeks, and has been developing and using his unique approach to help others ever since.
